Why is it that getting around to personal projects always seems to take a million years. Well success, our summer long project has finally landed. Earlier in the spring we found a charming old dresser sitting in our back alley. We hauled it upstairs, and little by little scraped off the original slapdash paint job. (That’s really what took forever) Finally, we sanded the old feller down, dressed him up nice in a few coats of paint, buttoned him up with delightful knobs from Anthropologie, and vu’alla! Internet, meet our newest tallboy, a dapper old gentlemen named... dresser. +

The 2008 Annual Report is Caterpillar’s response to this challenge, highlighting many of their current global endeavors. In addition, the book was not printed, but created into a fully interactive PDF that could be distributed via download or email, yet sized appropriately to individually print if necessary.

This weeks TEDS is one of my favorite collaboratives to visit, peruse, and reference than I think any other design firm out there. Most of Onlab's projects are thought driven sequential artifacts, aka books. Working out of Germany, Onlab is a small team with savvy sensibilities. They have a natural affinity for beautiful typography with rich intriguing texture, small important details, and the perfect subtle flare that makes a project vibrate. It was Saturday. Cold, overcast. Christina and I traipsed toward the train to run a few errands. As we rounded the corner to the gate my foot suddenly sped forward, tossing my balanced stride into comedic repose. Fortunately my metachlorian count surpasses my negligent eyesight, because I regained composure and continued a few steps to demonstrate how I "meant to do it." That's when we both looked back and saw what had caused my semi-embarrassing stumble. A banana peel. No joke. A banana peel. Who just slips on a banana peel? What in the world is going on? I don’t know if any of you read. If you happen to be one of the lucky literate people in this country you’ve probably read about the upcoming presidential election with all the flattery, promises, and schemes to dodge the piper which past elections have always afforded. If you haven’t taken the time to learn the issues, or see the sides here’s your chance.

Did you notice anything? Perhaps how similar they are? Do you notice how they both propose things without identifying all (or any) adverse effects, or how such policies are possible without overstepping bounds. I know you just fell off your chair right then. Not due to the epiphany of McBama’s analogous strategem, but because I implied that government has bounds. (or at least should)

Shocking I know.

Particulairly following this weeks rash “there must only be one solution:” bailout the rich people proposal.

Confident you all (3) took the time to read through my last political musing where a fabulous address was provided given, by President Ezra Taft Benson, Secretary of Agriculture to Eisenhower. He quotes a number of times a French economist and statesman, Bastiat, from a treatise titled “The Law.” Never heard of it? Well, you are in luck because I have prepared it in convenient pdf format for your own personal reading pleasure. Tada! (I know, it may be 17 whole long pages of words, but trust me it’s worth it.)

With that as a measuring stick now hold up all these political ideas. Now compare the candidates. It is startling how close we are leaning to some proven bad ideas. It’s startling to see how many liberties America is willing to forfeit.

Well news flash to the nation, there are not only two candidates. Some people out there are actually talking about things as they actually are. There are even candidates who are in support of this radical new idea called liberty.

I've just decided to call my illustrations drär. Why not. That's a sweet name. One day it will be a fancy zine featuring all the cool drool drärers that I know. It'll only have the rad stuff people sketch when doing nothing else. It'll basically be like someone scanned in Tyson Schenks brain, sliced into thin pieces, then bound together with red beeswax string and a little PVA. It'll be a big hit with the Swedes. Just watch.

It's really interesting to see the bleakness of Chicago as a whole, the gray and brown city, then step closer and see things one smidgen at a time. Here is the second installment from my most recent euphoric photo romp. All these images fall more under the "Fancy Facades" category. (Thanks for your vote Angela) My personal favorites are the first shot, the photo that has only the two muted blue doors in it, and the very last shot. The spacial relationships of the simple repeated geometric shapes juxtaposed with the senescent textures of age is what gets me all happy inside. +

Photographic Peregrination

Saturday I wandered a bit around the Lincoln Park area. Spending a few hours meandering the small streets and lovely shaded canopies of this historic district revealed many photo opportunities. On the train ride home I thought to myself, "Brandt, that sure was ruminative and relaxing. You/I have always enjoyed sauntering about, taking in the textures of century old burnt brick and thick walls of ivy. You/I also found great old signage and typography today. Perhaps the one of us should do this more often. "Yadda yadda, you get the idea. Sooo...

Yes folks we're back at it, and this time with a doozy. Matthew Rezac, operating out of Minneapolis, has somehow landed himself in this wonderful world of book and publication design. It's a happy place. There is something atman about considering an entire experience, sequencing the pace, the surprises, the ideas. Layering information through a stratum of discovery. It gets me all feverish, and wide eyed. Any odd, not only does Rezac have a hot site, but his projects display nice simple typography, beautiful photography, and a stylish order. A personal favorite is WARM.

It's been a Ben day

Now, I'd be fibbing if I said I'm not a dreamer. Glassy eyed, staring at the melancholy movements in the leaves, absorbing the color of grass and asphalt, slowing cars with the molasses of my indirect daze. All true. But as for actual dreams I'm lucky to see one per solstice. I long for them; yearn for them. When I have a dream the flood gates of my true creativity open. I see things that dazzle my mind, pictures, contraptions. I've remembered poems I've never before read or heard, but somehow always belonged to my subconscience. The dialog is usually so real that I've before mistaken it for reality. (That was an awkward conversation, and a very confusing few hours).

Last night I was graced by encephalitic intervention. I won't rehearse all the details or any of the introductory duration, only the end.

My bicycle had broken, I proceeded on foot. Along the sidewalk a lady past me from the opposite direction, then two skateboarders from behind. I watched them bound along and felt the urge to follow. I had no board, but a ceramic plate; red on top, matte black on bottom. Throwing it down and leaping, I went no where. It didn't matter. That wasn't the purpose. I began ollieing forward. What a blatant waste of energy. Along the road approaches a man. It's Ben Rakozy. His distinct face in profile is what gives him away. I haven't seen Ben for ages. Opening my mouth to speak I pull out a poker chip with royal blue hash marks 1/8 inch wide set 1/8 inch in around the edge. In the center is a burnt mustard star; five points. Next I pull a coin the size of a penny but bright and gold, it's markings uncertain. Afterward a set of keys, three on a ring. We then divulge our salutations and I pull slowly back to consciousness.

Well, my wife, unbeknown of my dream, leaves work at 5:45. At Belmont, 30 minutes into her journey, she sees a man. At first the profile is telling. She is sure it's Ben. He turns. The hair, the face, clothes, stance, walk, even his eyelashes. The train rears on. She grabs for the cell. Contacts. Ben Rakozy. Her first question, "Where are you?" "Home." "Awe man!" Her next call is to me. +

GraphicalHouse is four fellas all hailing from various points around the UKish. The shop has been operating for roughly 5 or 6 years and is based out of Glasgow, Scotland. First, I dig their site. Simple and Swiss; a cocktail anyone can appreciate. Their work reflects the same ideal. They groove the beautiful simple type with a sound attention to the little details. They also keep a diversified portfolio of clients to mingle the fun stuff while paying the bills. Simply solid work. +

This is the first Kurt Vonnegut book I've ever read but if all of his books are like this, then call me an addicted fan. It's written very smart, and poses some real think-out-loud ideas. I don't know enough of Vonnegut to know whether it's commentary on his personal feelings about meaning and the world, or an illustration of typical nihilistic quibblings. Either way, it's a worthy read. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.

Hold your breath ladies and gents (or more stately articulated: Good day to you mute reader) the long awaited time has arrived. Enter stage left "Tuesdays Erratic Design Site". Shot rings out, smoke machines billow, cowbells one and four ring portentously through the thickening blackness.

I love them, everyone loves them, design blogs are the best. Todays TEDS is just that. But not just any design blog. Nope. One of my favorites. Grain Edit (based out of Oakland, California) focuses on the sweet mercy design work from the 50's to 70's, plus many contemporary designers that carry on that old-time mid-century modern lovin. The proprietor/editor also takes the opportunity to interview some pretty fantastic artists, usually featuring a visual discussion about process, and a 30 second concept sketch. Give her a peek. +

For some reason or another the work Jessica Hische always makes me stop and reflect on just how boring the inside of my head is. All logic with a lucky whisp of flare ever so often. There is something cute, adorable, friendly, and feminine about her work that just makes me want to open a blank book and draw puppies, bunnies, and little capital M's. The illustrations are delightful, and her custom typography is exquisite. Check out the typography tab for sure. Very playful, very beautiful. +

The Dark Knight

Holy roman candle Batman!
We went and saw The Dark Knight yesterday and ka-blewy it was good. So yes indeed I'm going to be talking about it, and yes indeed if you haven't seen it I would recommend stop reading right now. Spoiler alert ahead. Nil keepo readingo. Red lights, sirens blaring, horses neighing, seven maids a milking, dead end, thank you come again, no das, are you still here? You have been amply warned.

First off, let's all tilt our top hats to Mr. Ledger. Talk about a truly creepy villain, beyond incredible performance, and a generous applaud to the writers who got it right.

Alright a few favorite bits:
Clowns killing clowns
Creepy disappearing pencil act.
"If you are good at something never do it for free."
Disturbing fake batman that falls down and hits the window.
Cute nurse outfit.
"and I can't kill you because you're just too much fun!"
Semi-truck endo
Commissioner Gordon and the Kansas City shuffle
Possibly the best Chicago has ever looked in a film.

But seriously, whats up with Rachel Dawes getting blown up? Talk about a love story gone awry. I understand that Harvey Dent needed the incentive, but Rachel? What's Batman without Rachel Dawes?

A few criticisms:
One of these is really a stem from the other but we will start with the easiest. What kind of a lame toss away was that bit with Scarecrow? I thought Scarecrow was the one guy that was in Arkham. Yet here he is running a money laundering deal in a parking garage with Big Boy Caprice. And was the deal methodical, intricately planned, universally nihilist typical of our pal Scarecrow? Not quite. Don't insult me.

Second, looking at story telling from a larger level. I was expecting to sit down in the theater and immediately be consumed with all the billions of crazies left over from the first film. I mean wasn't the entire lower section of Gotham filled with crazyman gas spawning streets filled with eldritch spooks? Instead I sit down and Gothams only problems are freaky man Joker and organized crime. Organized crime? Are they expecting to make more films after this or what? They left the streets clean. I think they missed a no-brainer opportunity to have this whole film be subtle foreshadowing. But whatever. If you look at the story telling from a single one time movie point of view, it was good. It was really good.

Alright now, come on folks, I know you saw it. Fill in the gaps here. I want to hear what you've got to add. +

My new feet

Last week I want boating with the fam. I of course neglected to put any sunblock on my feet. Five hours out on an inflatable tube equals one week of beet red, swollen puffy trotters. Seriously my ankles were a mere extension of my calf.

Well, my feets's are back to walking (wearing shoes and all) but now I'm molting. I've never had full sheets of skin actually pull from my body. It's like on the first Mission Impossible when Jon Voight takes off his face and it's crazy Tom Cruise underneath, then he takes off his face and it's 1979 Sigourney Weaver, and she takes off her face and it's Roger Rabbit, then it's Jason Alexander, then Mickey Mouse Club Justin Timberlake, and when he takes off his face it's crazy Tom Cruise again. Then you get all sweaty and nervous because the story just became so clear. That's kind of what my new feet are looking like, except maybe a little more Sigourney Weaver. 15%.

What of it? Anyone out there have a back that looks like Pruneface from 1990 Dick Tracy? +

Okay, so this one actually does fall into the "erratic" category. Be ready for the unconventional / frustratingly non-functional / doggone swankiest design site of the week. Beetroot, based in Greece, has some fantastically beautiful minimalistic, and modern work (that is if you can find it.) They also have some just plain odd stuff that makes my insides get all squirmy and giggly, like a girl octopus lost in an underwater spaghetti maze with 1986 David Bowie. Yeah, you heard right. Try Edge08/Intro, you'll see what I mean. +

Tin Lizzy Nostalgia

Holy sock puppets. I've been in Utah on holiday this past week, dawdling at my parents house. So I started sifting though an old box and guess what I found... my favorite childhood toys ever : Micro Machines. A whole tin full of them. My brain was suddenly catapulted into a reminiscent reverie of sitting for hours, blankets draped down my bunk bed, racing miniature cars down into an imagined city filled with army guys and Ninja Turtles. Ahh, serenity. I then spent the next three hours building a fort for a car caper.

This weeks TEDS is a obeisance to the Memmott. I've seen a number of collage cutters out there but only a few have the eye to do it right. Misprinted Typ e is one of the few that has it going on. Hailing from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Eduardo Recife is picture cutting, type creating, scribble drawing, glue glueing, aesthetic savant. Killer Bunnies : 1

Killer Bunnies is a highly confusing game, with twelve billion rules succinctly written in small little rule books. In hopes of simplifying an already complex system, I compiled all the rules books into one large encyclopedia, with extras. Included is overview, market, bunny, and color coded card information. Tips for teaching new players, examples of card types, and Magic Carrot tracker.

The Proper Role of Government

Generally I avoid political squabbling because I feel its a futile belief system. All we can do is make the best (hopefully informed) decision we can.

Bemused by Hillary's befuddling buffoonism while trying to pick out the frightening realities Obama conceals in his flowery orations whilst painfully milling through the mindless pattering of McCain I've recently felt at an utter loss. Why is who better or none.

Well, I came across this essay by Ezra Taft Benson (who was the Secretary of Agriculture during the reign of Ike, and later president of the LDS Church, if you didn't know) that basically aligned the stars. It explains in the simplest terms the role of government. It really helps make sense of all the things politicians are proposing, and gives a good filter whether they have any right to do it. It's a must read for every Democrat, Republican, Green, Libertarian, Abolitionist, or "I pick the best person regardless of party" person, etal out there.

(I know it's long, but reading is good. It stimulates the mind. So take the time, it's worth it.)

Today's TEDS is some real hot butter. Not just the regular kind, or Fabio kind, but the smooth authentic flavor you would get at a movie theater. Non-format is a creative team from London. Not only do they have a prime roster of clients, but they execute with a slip stream of visual candy. Almost every project is treated as a typographic party. They can also be blamed for the hot mag "Varoom - The Journal of Illustration and Made Images."

I say they are definitely a good source if you are looking for something with style. What do you say? +

Six of Twenty

The regret for this post has already begun it's mudlike slurp, sinking past the ossified questions "Why?" and "What were you thinking?" Though contrary to my best judgment I've decided to post anyhow.

A few months ago I was invited to speak at the AIGA National Conference in Denver. It was part of an event known as 20/20. Twenty young designers had one minute each to present toward the theme of the conference. The theme was 'Next'. Guess who found a clip of the event. Now, before you indulge yourself, let it be known that I got many odd stares and a few compliments afterwards. Which in my opinion is success! If you watch the whole thing you'll see that I stick out a pinch. But if you are one of them folks who's time is molten gold, the presentations go alphabetically. So I'm number six.

I've been sifting through the shadowy confines of my computer of late and came across this old piece I did for work. A few of us were given a patch of spam to illustrate.

"Then I may love you, and not be afraid of offending?" said Mrs. Wilkins, fanning her hot face, and utterly forgetting. No sooner had the guest paid the usual stale compliments and bowed to these overtures of peace, and both institutions flourished long to state her wishes boldly.
"No, Henry is tired. He should take a rest."
"So, I'll go away," she began pausing on the threshold and on the white throat saw a little wound, from which the dismal tale of a lost battle that chilled their blood. And in then Billy gave several loud "cluck-clucks" and the others did the same.

I've decided it a stellar idea for today and each Tuesday forevermore to have "Tuesdays erratic design site" (a new exciting feature on poetic blather.) Not because the sites will be particularly erratic but because I'm randomly selecting them from my cash of inspirational design sites. I would use the word random in the title but erratic makes it into such a nice acronym. I hate you English language. So without further yammering, todays TEDS is a shout out to my buddy and yours Emilio. Iikki is a designer from Bilbao, Spain. He displays some nice type, print and web projects. Much of his work is hand crafted with organic, natural qualities. My personal favorite is his motion piece "Viva Calaca!!" It reminded me of Emilio. Simple moves, simple imagery, with an obsessive attention to detail make it into a really enjoyable motion experience. Enjoy.

Mild disclaimer : I call that Tuesday is allowed to come on any day of the week, as many times as I want throughout whatever month it happens or does not happen to be.

Cowboys and Astronauts

There are two great truths in this universe, Hulu and Firefly. Though the show only lasted 3/4 of a season, it was doomed to greatness in the annals of historic euphoria. Cowboys and Astronauts. Tell me how that combo couldn't work. It's an age old tale. We've all heard it. We've all played it in our tattered quilt and towel forts. MK12 knew it in their History of America. It's the golden goose. So do yourself a favor and watch it.

Oh, and don't be too upset when it ends right in the middle of brilliancy. They made a movie to follow up the canceled show called Serenity. It finishes everything off.
